Beach islands and mountainous hinterland - welcome to camping in Kvarner Bay

  • Most campsites on the mainland coast and on the islands of the Kvarner Bay are situated directly by the sea. Many offer pitches and mobile homes with sea view.
  • Most campsites also offer fine gravel beaches with good conditions for snorkeling, diving, or windsurfing.
  • As a change from camping and the island idyll: shopping in small old town boutiques around the baroque cathedral church in Rijeka - or in probably the largest shopping centre in Croatia, the Tower Center Rijeka with over 150 shops.

The bay is situated in the northern part of the Croatian Adriatic Sea, between Istria and the mainland coast of Croatia. On the mainland and especially on the bigger islands like Pag, Lošinj, Cres, Rab, or Krk you will find the most campsites. Most of them are situated directly on the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. They are ideal for a beach holiday or water sports. The mainland offers exciting mountain excursions, for example in the northern Velebit mountains. Here you can admire one of the deepest caves in the world, the Lukina Jama Cave. Animal lovers will love the observation stations in the Risnjak National Park. Here you can spot eagles, lynxes or even a bear. On the Kupa you can do adventurous "jaunts" with the kayak or rafting boat.

There is also a lot to discover culturally

For example, visit Rijeka, the largest city on Kvarner Bay. It is known for the town tower and gate, which gives access to the old town, and the mountain fortress Trsat. You can reach it in over 550 steps. The view is worth the climb. Also worth a visit: Lovran, the beach and climatic health resort at the foot of the mountain U?ka as well as Opatija, capital of the Riviera of the same name. The mundane seaside resort was once the favourite destination of Austro-Hungarian aristocrats. The splendid, meanwhile mostly restored bath architecture testifies still today to this time. A visit to the former prison island of Goli is also an experience.

You can look out for tuna fish on specially built platforms on the Adriatic coast

Whoever is lucky may also see a dolphin jumping out of the turquoise water. After so many experiences, Konobas or Gostionicas, the real Croatian restaurants, invite you to Mediterranean delights. Many campsites offer a cosy gastronomy with open-air seats. How about pasta, grilled sea bream or squid in white wine sauce - without missing Croatian prosciutto, air-dried Pršut ham or Pag sheep's cheese as a starter? And afterwards a sweet and nicely serrated Kroštule pastry?
